First Congregational Church
Maywood

Founded in 1871, we are the oldest church in Maywood with a rich history of service to the community.  Located at 400 North 5th Avenue at the corner of Erie and Fifth, we are close to public transportation and the UP Metra West Line station and not far from I-290.

Church School Program

Each Sunday at 9:30 we hold Church School.  Lead by a professional educator, this formation program stresses biblical understanding and faith in action.

Sunday Service

Sunday services are held at 11:00 am in the beautiful 300 seat sanctuary.  The warm glow of our stained glass windows and the stirring sounds from our pipe organ combine to make it a worshipful experience.

A special children's sermon focuses on the Gospel reading, reinforcing the children's earlier lessons.  Both the children and adult sermons stress practical application of the Gospel message.  Eucharist is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month plus special holydays.  See our schedule for Lent on our Worship page.

Lenten Program

Beginning Tuesday, February 22 and continuing through Tuesdays, we will be holding a special Lenten Prayer Service and Bible Study from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. We will focus on the theme of faith through the ages as we prepare for the Feast of the Resurrection, Easter.

Fellowship

You are most welcome to join us in fellowship following our Sunday service in the Mayflower Room.  Home made delectables, coffee and fruit juice are served while we have an opportunity to get to know each other better and plan our future.

Food Pantry

In conjunction with the Potter's Ministry, we offer food pantry services on the first and third Thursdays of each month.  Canned good and a willing spirit are always appreciated.

Other Churches

United in Christ, First Congregational also is home for two other faith communities, including the Seventh Day Adventists and the Potter's Ministries.

Lent at First

The Lenten season begins Wednesday February 9 with a special service at 7:30 pm.  Lent is that time of our faith journey when we, like Christ in the desert, take the time to look into our lives and at the gospel message.

During our Lenten journey we will take time to prepare ourselves for the great Easter Feast.  We will spend Tuesday evenings looking at the history of Christian faith as lived by individuals in many ages.  Join us on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm in the pastor's study at the church beginning February 22.

Worldwide Marriage Day

Celebrate your marriage with us on Sunday, February 6 at the 11 am service.  Whether you have been married for a few days or decades this is a great opportunity to renew your pledges of love and fidelity.

SARAH is Coming to First

Social Action Response and Help is an opportunity for you to make a difference in the life of our community and the world.  Each week  we will work together during our Fellowship hour to live out our call to service.
